The Wisconsin women's tennis program entered the new year with a perfect 6-0 record, a milestone that stands as the team's finest opening stretch since 1992. On Saturday, the Badgers dominated a doubleheader, securing victories over both Bradley University and Green Bay with identical 7-0 scorelines. The decisive nature of both matches underscores the depth and consistency the squad has developed early in the campaign.

The first contest saw the Badgers dismantle the Bradley squad without dropping a single set. The team's ability to control the pace of play was evident from the outset, as they moved through the lineup with efficiency. This performance set the stage for the second match of the day, where Wisconsin faced a Green Bay team that was playing with limited personnel.

Green Bay entered the second match with only five players available, a numerical disadvantage that proved difficult to overcome against the balanced Badgers roster. The absence of key players left the visitors struggling to find any rhythm, allowing Wisconsin to dictate the flow of every point. The result reinforced the Badgers' status as the top contender in their conference heading into the indoor season.

Doubles play provided the early foundation for the win. Freshman MaryAnn Rompf and senior Kelsey Grambeau opened the scoring with a 6-1 victory over Theresa Tebon and Tallie Piaskowski. The momentum continued as sophomore Melissa Pick and freshman Lexi Keberle followed with a 6-0 shutout of Maria Neff and Samm Pedersen. These two wins gave Wisconsin a commanding lead before the singles competition began.

The singles matches mirrored the dominance seen in doubles, with no Wisconsin player surrendering a set in either contest. At the first singles position, Lexi Keberle defeated Tebon 6-1 and 6-1. Keberle now boasts an unblemished record of 7-0 across both singles and doubles events. MaryAnn Rompf secured the second singles spot with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Piaskowski.

The Badgers closed out the match with clean sweeps at the remaining positions. Michelle Linden took the third singles match 6-1 and 6-0 against Sterre Tijssens, while Melissa Pick shut out Neff 6-0 in both sets. Christina Zordani finished the day with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Pedersen at the fifth singles position, improving her personal singles record to 5-0 for the season.

Head coach Kelcy McKenna emphasized that the team's success stems from mastering the fundamentals rather than relying on luck. She noted that the players excelled in managing their attitude, effort, and energy, which she identified as the three critical pillars of their performance. McKenna stressed that these controllable factors are essential for sustaining their high level of play throughout the year.

Looking ahead to the National Team Indoor Championship, McKenna outlined a plan focused on precision and consistency. She stated that the team must concentrate on executing the small details in practice, specifically within day-to-day drills and match simulations. This preparation is designed to ensure the squad is fully ready for the upcoming indoor season and the remainder of the spring schedule.

Despite the perfect record, the coach identified specific areas for refinement, particularly in doubles play. McKenna indicated a need to improve serve and return mechanics, aiming to be the first team to apply aggression. She also highlighted the importance of hitting targeted spots during service plays to maintain control over the point.

McKenna added that the team must leverage any doubles advantage when transitioning to singles. She urged the players to carry the momentum forward, staying gritty and minimizing free points given away to the opponent. This strategic focus will be crucial as the Badgers prepare for their next major challenge.

The team will next take the court from Feb. 9 to 12, when they host the National Team Indoor Championship. Wisconsin will look to extend its unbeaten streak during this tournament, aiming to build on the strong foundation laid in their recent doubleheader victories.
