Manchester City lost their first Premier League match of the season on Saturday, falling 2-1 to Aston Villa at Villa Park. The result ended a seven-game winning streak for the visitors, who had previously set a record for the most consecutive opening wins by a new manager.
Nicolas Jackson scored both goals for the home side. The first came in the sixth minute after a heavy touch from Marc Guehi allowed Jackson to cut inside Elliott Anderson. Jackson then blasted a high shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma to open the scoring.
City dominated possession for much of the first half but faced resistance from Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. Iliman Ndiaye, Rayan Cherki, and Abdukodir Khusanov were all denied, with Ndiaye also striking the post. Erling Haaland equalized in the 52nd minute with a header from a Ndiaye cross, marking his 13th goal in 10 appearances this season.
Villa regained the lead in the 60th minute. Ibrahim Mbaye broke past the City defense and crossed the ball to Jackson, who fired a low shot past Donnarumma. Josko Gvardiol had a chance to equalize moments after the first goal, but his drive hit the crossbar.
Unai Emery's team has won six of its last seven matches in all competitions. This victory moves them to sixth place in the table. The win comes after Emery rebuilt his squad following the departure of six players who started last season's Europa League final.
New summer signings Jackson, Suzuki, Mbaye, and Johan Manzambi have performed well despite a slow start to the campaign. The result gives Arsenal a chance to level the points table if they beat Everton later on Saturday.
City is appealing a guilty verdict on more than 100 financial charges from between 2009 and 2018. Potential sanctions include relegation, but the players showed little sign of distraction until two defensive errors cost them the match.
