Former Rep. Harold Ford of Tennessee established an exploratory committee on Tuesday to evaluate a 2028 presidential campaign. The filing occurred before the midpoint of the 2026 midterm election cycle, marking one of the first formal steps toward the next presidential contest.
The move follows a decisive election on Nov. 3 where Democrats secured major victories. Several candidates and officials have already shifted their focus to the 2028 cycle. Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia, who won a second Senate term, delivered a victory speech that referenced national themes. He stated that the campaign emphasized banning corporate and secret money from politics and guaranteeing healthcare for every American.
Other Democratic governors are also being discussed as potential future candidates. Officials named in early speculation include Gov. Wes Moore of Maryland, Gov. JB Pritzker of Illinois, and Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania. These figures have not formally announced plans but are part of the growing list of names associated with the upcoming race.
The Republican side is also assessing the political fallout. Vice President JD Vance posted to social media regarding the midterm results. He attributed the loss to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The post was shared by Donald Trump Jr. and acknowledged that the President had mentioned the war in a previous address.
Criticism within the GOP has surfaced as well. Rep. Greg Steube of Florida blamed party leadership for the election night outcomes. His comments reflect a broader effort among Republicans to adjust strategies in response to the shifting electoral results. The party is now evaluating its position for the next four years.
President Donald Trump addressed the early speculation on the vice presidency. He declined to endorse any specific candidate for the 2028 nomination. Trump noted that many individuals might enter the race, or potentially none would run. He indicated that the decision to participate remained open for all potential contenders, including his current running mate.
