Mbappe bids to win top soccer prize without team trophies
The French striker relies on record-breaking individual statistics to challenge rivals who lifted major titles this year.

Kylian Mbappe enters Monday's Ballon d'Or ceremony in London with a distinct disadvantage and a compelling statistical case. Despite finishing his season without a single team trophy, the Real Madrid forward has amassed enough individual records to claim he is the strongest candidate for the annual soccer award.
The 2025-26 campaign, which the prize recognizes, saw Mbappe go trophyless at both the club and international levels. He faces stiff competition from players who secured major silverware, yet he remains confident that his on-field dominance will sway the voters.
His primary argument rests on his performance at the 2026 World Cup in North America. Mbappe claimed the Golden Boot for the second consecutive tournament and set a new all-time record for goals in World Cup history. He scored 22 times in 22 matches, surpassing Lionel Messi, who holds the previous best with 21 goals, and Miroslav Klose, who has 16. Mbappe noted that overtaking long-time legends in the sport's premier tournament is a standout achievement.
Club performance also supports his bid. The former Paris Saint-Germain forward finished as the top scorer in La Liga with 25 goals and also led the scoring charts in the Champions League with 15 goals. He believes this consistency across the biggest competitions makes this a favorable year for his candidacy.
However, the absence of silverware is a significant weakness in his campaign. Real Madrid endured a turbulent season under managers Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa. They finished second in the Spanish league and were eliminated in the Champions League quarterfinals by Bayern Munich. This result marked the club's second consecutive season without a major title. France also fell short at the World Cup, finishing fourth after losses to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place match.
Rival contenders have stronger resumes in terms of team success. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and the league title with Barcelona. Harry Kane of Bayern Munich collected three trophies last season, including the Bundesliga championship. These achievements give their supporters strong arguments against Mbappe's individual records.
Mbappe maintains that the award should focus on the individual player rather than the team. Speaking to radio station RFI, he emphasized that voters are selecting a person, not a squad. He believes that standout individual moments and performance are what define a winner. Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has voiced his support, stating that the player who made history this summer is not from Paris Saint-Germain or the Spanish national team.
Historical trends suggest Mbappe faces an uphill battle. Every winner in the past decade has lifted at least one trophy in the award year. Ousmane Dembele won the 2025 prize after helping Paris Saint-Germain secure their first Champions League title. Rodri was named the winner two years ago after winning Euro 2024 with Spain and the Premier League with Manchester City.
There is one precedent for a trophyless winner. Cristiano Ronaldo received the award in 2013 after a season in which Real Madrid finished second in the league and Portugal failed to advance past the World Cup playoffs. Ronaldo scored 66 goals that year and ended Lionel Messi's four-year winning streak. With nine nominations and a third-place finish in 2023, many observers believe Mbappe's turn may finally have arrived.
