Rep. Erin Houchin of Indiana has formally entered the race for chair of the House Republican Conference, the third-highest leadership position in the chamber. She announced her candidacy in a letter to colleagues, positioning herself against two opponents for the post.

The contest pits Houchin against Rep. Lisa McClain of Michigan, the current chair, and Rep. Greg Steube of Florida. Republicans are scheduled to select their leadership slate for the next Congress on Tuesday, according to reports from multiple outlets.

Houchin represented Indiana's 9th District, a seat that includes towns such as Bedford, Bloomington, and Madison. The Associated Press projected her reelection victory on Tuesday. Final tallies showed 122,326 votes for Houchin, securing 54% of the total. Democrat Brad A. Meyer received 98,480 votes, while Libertarian Tonya L. Hudson garnered 5,530.

In her letter, Houchin outlined a plan to sharpen the party's message and assist members in communicating with voters. She emphasized her background in public relations and political campaigns, noting she previously ran a communications business. Her stated goals include providing media preparation and crisis communications support to the caucus.

The chair of the House Republican Conference manages regular caucus meetings and directs party operations. The role includes overseeing the Legislative Digest and acting as a spokesperson for the group. Houchin holds a master's degree in political management and graduated from the Women's Campaign School at Yale. She cited more than 20 years of experience in communications and campaigns.

The position carries substantial influence over party strategy and legislative review. Former Vice President Mike Pence held this specific leadership post from 2009 to 2011. Houchin, a Salem resident, now seeks to extend her influence within the party's internal structure ahead of the leadership vote.
