The West Bank economy faces immediate disruption as a large scale military operation begins in Hebron. Israeli forces have started demolishing residential and commercial properties in the city, displacing hundreds of families and restricting movement for its 200,000 residents. This action marks the most significant intervention in the territory since 1967 according to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who announced the campaign on Friday. The operation follows an attack on a checkpoint where two Israeli soldiers were killed and three were wounded. Both Palestinian gunmen were killed during the incident.

The Israel Defense Forces stated that they are targeting dozens of locations across the West Bank. The military expects operations to continue for several days. The army has sealed off Hebron, which sharply limits the flow of people and goods. Local officials report that bulldozers have leveled entire streets. This destruction includes homes, businesses, industrial sites, and critical infrastructure in the Ein Deir Baha and Farsh al-Hawa neighborhoods.

Mayor Youssef al-Jaabari indicated that the military intends to clear roughly 0.35 square kilometers of urban land. He estimates that 2,500 people will be displaced from this area. The city governor and deputy mayor confirmed that at least 200 families have already been displaced. Many residents were ordered to leave their homes without their vehicles. Some families spent the night outdoors while their properties were marked for demolition with spray paint. This rapid clearance affects the local labor market and business continuity in the region.

The timing of the operation is significant for political markets. Israel’s general election is scheduled for four days from now. Netanyahu’s campaign has focused heavily on security. He cancelled his party’s Friday morning events to travel to Hebron in protective armor. He posted a video from the scene stating that forces would go house to house to remove weapons and destroy terrorist infrastructure. This direct leadership presence aims to reinforce the security narrative central to his reelection bid.

Netanyahu said he reviewed plans for the largest West Bank operation since 1967. It remains unclear if the current Hebron campaign is part of that broader strategy. In an interview with i24 television, he threatened a very big surprise for the Palestinian Authority. The Authority called for urgent international action to prevent further forced displacement. This diplomatic pressure seeks to stabilize the region and protect its governance structures.

Domestic political figures are also shaping the narrative. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich urged a campaign in the West Bank similar to those in Gaza or Lebanon. National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir called for the dismantling of the Palestinian Authority. These statements suggest a shift in policy expectations that could influence long term investment and trade relations in the region.

Mayor al-Jaabari told journalists that the operation is driven by the upcoming elections. He believes Netanyahu and his ministers are seeking to win votes from the far right and settler communities. The immediate impact on the Hebron market includes reduced consumer activity and potential supply chain delays due to the sealed city borders. Businesses in the targeted neighborhoods face direct losses as assets are cleared. The broader West Bank market will likely monitor the duration of these operations for signs of economic stability.
