Anthropic’s Imminent IPO Set to Yield Billions in Gains for Early Investors
A projected two-trillion-dollar public listing promises significant financial returns for venture capital firms and prominent individuals who backed the AI lab during its earlier, lower-valued funding rounds.

The artificial intelligence sector is poised for a transformative moment as Anthropic prepares to enter the public markets. While the company’s anticipated listing is expected to occur later this year at a valuation potentially reaching two trillion dollars, the financial implications for its earliest supporters are already substantial. Even at the firm’s most recent private market valuation of 965 billion dollars, the holdings of key venture capital firms and individual backers have accumulated into multi-billion-dollar assets.
Among the most significant individual beneficiaries is Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google. According to PitchBook data, Schmidt participated in Anthropic’s Series A round in 2021, a period when the startup was valued at just 461 million dollars. His current ownership stake, which stands at approximately one percent of the company, is now valued at nearly 10 billion dollars based on the latest private pricing. This early entry point has allowed his position to appreciate dramatically ahead of the expected public offering.
Institutional investors have also secured massive positions, though their entry points varied. Iconiq, for instance, deployed 6 billion dollars in funding last year when Anthropic was already valued at 183 billion dollars. That late-stage investment has since grown to a worth of 17 billion dollars. Analysts suggest that this position could potentially double in value once the company completes its initial public offering, underscoring the continued momentum in the AI market.
Other prominent venture capital firms have seen similar appreciation in their portfolios. Menlo Ventures, which led the company’s Series D round, has invested more than 1 billion dollars over time. This commitment now translates to a stake worth approximately 14 billion dollars. Similarly, Sequoia, which first backed the AI lab earlier this year at a 380 billion dollar valuation, invested 3 billion dollars to secure about one percent ownership. This move has already resulted in the firm more than doubling its initial investment.
Smaller or specialized funds have experienced even more extreme multiples on their capital. Spark Capital, the only venture firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic, invested 75 million dollars during the 2023 Series C round when the company was valued at 5 billion dollars. That position has since ballooned more than ninetyfold to a current value of 7 billion dollars. Meanwhile, Sound Ventures, co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, invested 35 million dollars in that same 2023 round and subsequently added 400 million dollars. Although Kutcher departed the firm this year to launch a new venture capital entity, the firm’s stake remains worth billions.
While the projected two-trillion-dollar valuation represents the ceiling for these gains, the current private market prices already reflect a windfall for those who entered the company during its earlier stages. The upcoming listing is expected to provide a liquidity event that further solidifies these financial outcomes for both early-stage and later-stage investors.
