Punta Gorda Charlotte volleyball defeated Sunlake 3-2 on Oct. 28, snapping a 28-set winning streak for the Seahawks and ending their season one win short of a third consecutive state tournament appearance. The Tarpons overcame a first-set loss to claim the Class 5A region final title in front of their home crowd in Land O' Lakes.

The final score stood at 19-25, 25-22, 25-16, 23-25, 15-10 in favor of Charlotte. Sunlake had won 27 straight sets entering the match, a run that included nine sweeps dating to Sept. 29. That streak carried the Seahawks through a district title and regional victories over Palmetto Ridge and East Lake. The opening set extended the record to 28 before Charlotte seized control of the middle frames.

Sunlake finished the regular season and postseason with a 22-7 record. Charlotte, also 22-8, capitalized on defensive pressure that limited the Seahawks' offense. The Tarpons recorded 10 blocks and 84 digs throughout the match. Many of those defensive plays came against attacks from Amelia Snider, a Syracuse commit and one of the region's top outside hitters.

Snider had an inconsistent night at the service line but finished her senior year with 246 kills. Her four-year varsity career totals 1,177 kills. She departs along with eight other seniors from a program that has reached the state tournament in the last two seasons.

Erinn Larson led the team with 52 aces and finished with 174 kills for the season, bringing her career total to 384. Cailyn Barnes contributed 168 kills for the year, a career total of 374. Olivia Grobb added 333 digs to her senior season statistics.

Elyse Garcia Zapata, now 133-62 in her eighth year at the helm, credited Charlotte's energy for forcing mistakes. She said the loss does not diminish the work ethic of the senior class.

"Obviously the result isn't what we wanted and the loss does sting, but that doesn't take away from the culmination of all the hard work this group of seniors, coupled with those before them, have put in over the last few seasons," Garcia Zapata said. "They've elevated the standard and the expectation of Sunlake volleyball. … Credit to Charlotte. They played with a great amount of energy and forced us into making mistakes that got them the win."

In other district results, golf and swimming competitions concluded earlier in the week. In Class 1A-District 6 boys golf at Seven Springs, Angeline placed fourth with Jackson Felix shooting an 83. Preston Yu of Academy at the Lakes shot a 74 to finish fourth individually.

The Sunlake girls swim team won the Class 3A-District 5 title, while the Sunlake boys placed second. Payton Burton won the 200-yard individual medley and anchored relay victories for the girls. In the 3A-District 9 golf tournament, Sunlake boys finished sixth with a team score of 357, three strokes ahead of Land O' Lakes.
