The Oklahoma City Thunder will honor Russell Westbrook with a jersey retirement ceremony on Feb. 7, 2027. The event is scheduled for a home matchup against the New York Knicks at the Paycom Center.
Westbrook concluded an 18-year career this past offseason. He recorded nine All-Star selections and nine All-NBA team honors during his time in the league. His 2016-17 season earned him the Most Valuable Player award.
His tenure in Oklahoma City defined his statistical peak. Across 821 games in the Thunder uniform, Westbrook averaged 23.0 points, 8.4 assists, 7.0 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game. He played for other franchises later in his career, including the Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Denver Nuggets, and Sacramento Kings, but never stayed longer than two full seasons with any team.
General Manager Sam Presti emphasized the player's dual impact on the organization and the local area. Presti stated, "Many players make an impact but only great players leave a legacy. Russell Westbrook's legacy was built both on the court and in the community." He added that Oklahomans view Westbrook as one of their own due to his relentless mindset and deep commitment.
Recent roster changes have fueled speculation about Westbrook's potential return. Injuries to Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace left the Thunder with questions regarding their guard depth. During a press conference last week, Presti addressed the possibility of calling Westbrook back for the remainder of the season.
"I haven't thought about anything relative to the roster spot," Presti said. "I understand the question, but all I'm really focused on right now is players, getting them the right support, and then helping everybody with our group realize that, you know, we have a tremendous challenge in front of us."
The announcement clarifies that Westbrook is not returning to play for the current roster. His legacy in Oklahoma City solidified after Kevin Durant departed for the Golden State Warriors. Westbrook became the central figure of loyalty for the franchise, earning the status of the most beloved figure in team history despite the absence of a championship title during his primary run.
