The Minnesota Vikings arrive in Detroit on Sunday as the only undefeated team in the National Football League. They hold a 6-0 record, a feat that has not happened for them since 2000. The game kicks off at noon on Fox-32 at Ford Field.
The matchup pits two contrasting styles against each other. Minnesota has allowed just 12.3 points per game, the lowest total in the NFL. Detroit averages 30.7 points per game, ranking second in the league behind only the Buffalo Bills. The Lions are currently 4-2.
The Vikings offense has struggled to keep pace with their defense. They have scored only four touchdowns in their last five games. That averages to one and a half offensive touchdowns per game, the second-lowest rate in the league. Quarterback Kyler Murray said the team needs to finish drives with touchdowns rather than field goals.
Murray expressed confidence that a breakout performance is coming. He noted that he believes in the players around him and that his trust in the offense will not waver.
Detroit is coming off a win over the Green Bay Packers. That was their first divisional game of the season. Coach Dan Campbell called the Vikings the best team on paper. He said the Lions need to get fired up for the competition within their division.
The Lions have a balanced attack led by Jared Goff. He is throwing with high efficiency and has not been intercepted in 223 passes. That ranks sixth among quarterbacks for most pass attempts without an interception to start a season. He has thrown 14 touchdown passes without a pick, matching Russell Wilson's 2019 record for the first six games.
Goff leads the league with a 112.5 passer rating. He also averages 298 passing yards per game and 14.67 passing first downs per game. He is supported by running back Jahmyr Gibbs, who has recorded at least 40 rushing first downs and 10 receiving first downs through six games. No other player has done that since the NFL began tracking it in 1981.
Receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, along with tight end Sam LaPorta, round out the receiving corps. The offensive line has provided solid protection. The Lions defense allowed an average of 19 points during their recent two-game winning streak.
Minnesota's defense relies heavily on blitzing. They have given up 13 points or fewer and 224 yards or fewer in three straight games. They are the third team in two decades to do that. The Vikings have a plus-7 turnover margin and lead the league with seven interceptions.
The last time two teams with such contrasting stats met in the eighth week or later was in 2019. The Baltimore Ravens' offense beat the New England Patriots' defense that year. The Vikings have won four straight NFC North games and nine of their last 12 in the division.
