Hilario Cruz Cruz, a longtime street vendor in the Phoenix area, was rescued from a severe storm by employees at a PNC Bank branch last week. As high winds and hail struck the neighborhood, staff members acted quickly to bring Cruz Cruz and his food cart inside the building. The event was captured on video and has since spread rapidly across social media platforms.

The incident occurred during a period of intense weather that swept through the valley. According to footage shared by a bystander, the wind was strong enough to push against the bank’s entrance doors. Cruz Cruz, who sells elotes and fresh fruit, was caught outside when the storm intensified. Employees from the bank worked together to maneuver the cart into the lobby while holding the door against the gale.

Cruz Cruz described the physical effort required to save the cart in an interview with FOX 10 Phoenix. He explained that one employee held the door shut with one hand while pulling the cart with the other. A second young man assisted from the opposite side. Cruz Cruz noted that if he had been at a different location, the specific combination of staff and structure might not have allowed for such a rescue.

The bank employees were not strangers to the vendor. They had been purchasing food from his cart for years, establishing a personal connection that Cruz Cruz believes motivated their decision to act. The manager of the branch reportedly insisted that the cart would fit inside, despite Cruz Cruz’s initial doubts about the space. The manager’s confidence guided the group’s actions until the vendor and his inventory were safely indoors.

Following the storm, Cruz Cruz had to walk home through fallen trees and branches. However, he returned to his regular spot on Peoria Avenue just one week later. Since the video went viral, amassing more than 1 million views on TikTok and hundreds of thousands of likes, his business has seen a surge in customers. The clip has been viewed by people across the country who were moved by the teamwork displayed by the bank staff.

Cruz Cruz expressed deep gratitude to the bank manager and the employees who assisted him. He stated that because of their intervention, no serious damage occurred to him or his livelihood. The vendor emphasized that his long-term customers were the reason they did not leave him outside in the elements. PNC Bank has been contacted for additional information regarding the incident and the employees involved.

The rescue highlights the relationship between local businesses and their regulars in a community setting. The video has become a focal point for discussions about customer loyalty and employee initiative during emergencies. Cruz Cruz continues to sell his goods in the same location, now with a larger audience aware of his story.
