A 36-year-old woman from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire died on the island of Bimini on Tuesday after a strong current separated her from her family during a snorkeling trip. Royal Bahamas Police Force officers opened an investigation into the sudden death of the mother of two.

The incident occurred near the southern point of the island, where the woman had been in the water with her husband and their two sons. Police report that a strong current carried both boys away from the group. As the woman attempted to swim toward her sons, the water took her as well. The boys were eventually pulled from the water.

Shortly after 10:00 am, officers at the Alice Town police station received word that an unresponsive woman was at the North Bimini Ferry Dock. By the time they arrived, she had already been transported to a local clinic. Medical staff attempted to save her life, but a doctor pronounced her dead on arrival. Police noted that CPR was administered at the ferry dock after she was recovered from the water.

The police force stated that foul play is not suspected at this stage. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death. A Foreign Office spokesperson said officials are in contact with local authorities and providing support to the family.

The woman’s family is currently receiving consular assistance from British officials. The investigation remains active as authorities gather further details from the scene.
