A 36-year-old British woman died at a local clinic on North Bimini on Tuesday after spending ten minutes in the water. Royal Bahamas police are investigating the incident, which occurred during a family snorkeling outing.

The woman was snorkeling with her husband and their two sons near the southern point of North Bimini. Police report that a strong current pulled both boys away from the group. As she attempted to reach her children, the current also swept the mother from the water.

Officers at the Alice Town police station received a call shortly after 10 a.m. reporting an unresponsive woman at the North Bimini ferry dock. Police responded to the scene and found that the woman had already been transported to a local clinic for medical care.

A doctor at the clinic pronounced the woman dead despite resuscitation efforts. Police state that she was pulled from the water and brought to the ferry dock, where bystanders administered CPR. The force indicated that foul play is not suspected at this time.

An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death. The Royal Bahamas police force released a preliminary account of the events on social media. The statement noted that the two sons were rescued from the water safely.

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed it is aware of the death. A spokesperson said officials are in contact with local authorities and providing support to the family. The department stated its thoughts were with the family of the British woman who died.

North Bimini is part of a small island group located between Andros and Miami, Florida. It is the closest point in the Bahamas to the US mainland. The area is also known for a world-leading shark research centre.
