Nintendo released a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on Thursday for the Switch 2. The game serves as a direct update to the 1998 title, aiming to preserve the original experience while adjusting it for modern hardware. The core conflict of the release is its reliance on nostalgia rather than new design. The game positions itself as a definitive version of a classic, ensuring the title remains accessible for upcoming generations.

The narrative structure remains unchanged. The protagonist, Link, traverses two distinct time periods. He first operates as a child in a post-apocalyptic setting. After a seven-year gap, the story shifts to his adult life. This structure requires players to revisit characters and locations they encountered earlier. The goal remains to restore the world to its previous state, a theme that mirrors the 28-year wait between the original release and this new version.

The controls have been updated to meet contemporary standards. Nintendo replaced the original camera system with an over-the-shoulder view. While the top-down perspective during stealth sequences in Hyrule Castle was removed, the new jump and sprint buttons make movement feel more natural. Combat is smoother than in the original, although switching between targeted enemies remains less intuitive than in modern third-person games like Elden Ring.

Item management has also been streamlined. The game uses a quick menu system for swapping items. This system was introduced in Tears of the Kingdom in 2023 and continued in Echoes of Wisdom in 2024. It allows players to change strategies without pausing the game. The reviewer noted that this system enables faster tactical shifts, such as casting spells and using bombchus, compared to the equipment access in the 1998 version.

Visual changes present a mixed result. The textures are highly detailed, which often clashes with the game's cartoony character proportions. In some instances, the translation to modern graphics creates an uncanny effect. Animations are more extensive, leading to longer cutscenes in the opening hours. The pacing has slowed as a result. The game also softens the personalities of certain characters. Mido, originally a bully, is now portrayed as a well-intentioned but overbearing boss. The guide owl, Kaepora Gaebora, no longer repeats himself as frequently.

The economic systems in the game have shifted. Rupee inflation has occurred. Wallets can now hold double the cash compared to the original. However, Great Fairy upgrades are no longer free. Players must pay up to 500 rupees for these enhancements. A new quest log called Threads of Time assists players who become stuck, though complex quests like the Biggoron Sword mission still require external guides.

The remake is considered one of the most faithful adaptations in recent years. It avoids the extensive reimagining seen in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy or the Resident Evil 4 remake. Nintendo’s approach suggests a preference for preservation over reinvention. The company has scheduled a Zelda movie for next year. This release serves as a bridge to that project, ensuring the franchise’s legacy remains intact for decades.

The game is available now on the Switch 2. It represents a safe bet for Nintendo, leveraging a well-known IP to guarantee commercial success. The update preserves the original’s innovations while smoothing out its rough edges. The result is a product that prioritizes clarity and familiarity for players who have already experienced the original.
