Emergency crews in Greenville, Mississippi, responded to a chemical plant explosion just after 7 a.m. on Wednesday. The incident occurred at the Loveland facility, formerly known as Platte Chemical, involving a stored chemical herbicide.
Washington County emergency officials reported that the initial blast originated in a storage unit described as a “hot box.” Thick smoke spread from the site, prompting a shelter-in-place order for the surrounding area. Multiple agencies mobilized to manage the emergency.
Firefighters arrived on scene and contained the flames. Personnel followed decontamination protocols due to the potential for chemical exposure during the operation.
Greenville Mayor Errick Simmons addressed the public after the containment was achieved. He cited the coordination between local and state responders as a key factor in the response. “Our first priority is the safety of our residents, our first responders, and everyone working at or near the facility,” Simmons said. “I ask our citizens to remain calm, avoid the immediate area, and allow our firefighters and emergency personnel the space they need to do their jobs safely and effectively.”
Officials confirmed that no injuries were reported in the blast. They subsequently lifted the shelter-in-place order. The investigation into the cause of the explosion remained open as of the latest update.
