Bayern Munich heads into Sunday's Bundesliga fixture at Freiburg with a one-point lead at the top of the table but without its head coach. Vincent Kompany, 40, is receiving hospital treatment for a virus following a collapse on the training pitch on Friday.

Director of Sport Max Eberl told a news conference on Saturday that Kompany's condition was stable and that examinations were continuing to determine the nature of the illness. No recovery timeframe has been set. The club postponed its second team match scheduled for Friday after the collapse.

Eberl said the absence would be measured in weeks rather than days. "Vinnie will be given all the time he needs. We're not starting to put together any timeframes," he said, adding that the club first needs to understand the problem before discussing recovery. Eberl said the club did not consider seeking a postponement of the Bundesliga fixture.

Assistant coach Aaron Danks led Saturday's briefing and will take charge on Sunday. The English coach said he spoke briefly with Kompany on Friday to wish him well. "I explained to him that we wouldn't be having no football conversations. It was just checking in on his health and making sure he's OK," Danks said. "All the football operations are in our hands, and we'll work together as a team to keep the club moving forward." Eberl said a strong performance and positive result would help Kompany's recovery.

Germany captain Joshua Kimmich will also miss the Freiburg match; he has been on bereavement leave since Tuesday. Kompany had returned to the dugout for Wednesday's home match against Arsenal but missed the pre-match conference. "I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, and of course, I didn't listen to my body, and then at some point, my body just said, 'Enough is enough!'",
