The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Department of Dermatology has expanded its faculty with the arrival of a new assistant professor. Dr. Emily Coleman has joined the college to focus on complex medical dermatology and patient education.

Coleman began seeing patients in the UAMS Dermatology Clinic on the second floor of the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute in Little Rock. Access to her care requires a referral from a primary care provider or specialist. Her clinical practice covers conditions such as hidradenitis suppurativa, psoriasis, and autoimmune blistering diseases. She also treats general skin concerns including acne vulgaris and atopic dermatitis.

Sara Shalin, M.D., Ph.D., chair of the department, cited Coleman’s background as a key reason for her hire. Shalin stated that Coleman’s prior experience in complex medical dermatology, including cutaneous lymphoma, will help the department continue providing care to patients with severe skin disease. Shalin also noted Coleman’s enthusiasm for teaching resident and medical students.

Coleman previously served as an assistant professor of dermatology at Tulane University in New Orleans. Before that role, she completed her residency at the University of Vermont. She earned her medical degree from Yale School of Medicine in 2019. While at Yale, she worked as a research assistant in the dermatology department and published studies on onco-dermatology. Her undergraduate studies in sociology and anthropology took place at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania.

The addition of Coleman increases the number of specialists available to the region. UAMS remains the state’s only health sciences university. The institution operates colleges for medicine, nursing, pharmacy, health professions, and public health. It maintains hospitals in Little Rock and Bryant, along with an orthopaedic hospital. UAMS also runs a statewide network of regional campuses and seven specialized institutes.

The system includes UAMS Health, which encompasses all clinical enterprises of the university. This includes affiliated hospitals in Pine Bluff, Helena-West Helena, Mena, and Warren. UAMS is the only adult Level 1 trauma center in Arkansas. The university employs approximately 12,000 people, including 1,200 physicians. These doctors provide care at UAMS, its regional campuses, Arkansas Children’s, the VA Medical Center, and Baptist Health.

Coleman’s appointment adds to the existing faculty of 3,813 students and 1,030 medical residents and fellows at UAMS. The university also hosts two dental residents. Patients can find contact information through the UAMS website or the UAMS Health portal.
