A gunman firing from a moving vehicle left one person dead and at least five others injured in the Paris suburb of Trappes on Friday. The attack targeted individuals based on their perceived religion or skin color, according to officials. The incident ended in the neighboring town of Coignieres, where police arrested the suspect after a standoff lasting just under 15 minutes.

The shooting began around 10:30 a.m. local time. Samy, a resident of Trappes, told reporters he saw a body lying on the ground from his window. His mother described a gray Renault Clio speeding past and hearing loud bangs. Forensic investigators later examined evidence at a nearby gas station. The suspect drove through Trappes and La Verriere, stopping at three locations to fire at passersby. One of these locations was a playground.

President Emmanuel Macron declared the incident a racist terror attack. He stated that the suspect’s statements indicated premeditation. Macron said the victims were targeted for their skin color or perceived religion and that there is no place for such violence in France. Trappes mayor Ali Rabeh described the event as an attempted mass killing. He noted the attack had likely Islamist and racist overtones, calling it a miracle that more people were not killed.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez reported that the weapon appeared to be military-grade or automatic. Five officers from the anti-crime brigade stopped the vehicle and detained the driver. The suspect has four prior convictions, all of which have been legally expunged. His identity has not been publicly released. Prosecutors opened an investigation for murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise. They are examining whether the victims were selected based on real or supposed race, ethnicity, nationality, or religion.

The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office placed three individuals from the suspect’s family and friend group in police custody on Friday evening and overnight. Officials did not specify why they were detained. Rabeh said one critically wounded victim is of North African origin. The person who died was of African origin. A 12-year-old girl, identified by the mayor of La Verriere, was shot eight times but is in stable condition. Three other victims are in serious condition.

The shooting occurred during a period of heightened tension in France. Mass protests over the cost of living and overnight curfews have taken place in recent weeks. Students, labor union members, and Yellow Vest activists plan to demonstrate again on Saturday. Nuñez said approximately 70,000 police officers and gendarmes will be deployed for the event. Elite units will guard public buildings, supported by helicopters, armored vehicles, and water cannons. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu stated on social media that all security and judicial resources are fully mobilized.

Major cultural events in Paris have adjusted their schedules due to safety concerns. The Louvre and other major museums will close for the weekend. Art Basel Paris canceled its weekend program. Macron said the nation is standing with the victims. The next scheduled demonstration is set for Saturday, with security forces preparing for potential clashes.
