Roope Hintz scored on a breakaway to give the Dallas Stars a 3-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday at American Airlines Center. The goal arrived at 3:47 of overtime, ending a game in which Dallas led in shots but trailed in score until late in regulation.
The winning sequence began with a defensive stop. Jason Robertson blocked a Winnipeg shot that had been created by his own earlier turnover. Miro Heiskanen then played the puck forward, sending Hintz into space. Hintz skated to the net and finished the play.
Hintz had already tied the game 2-2 with a six-on-five goal with two minutes remaining in the third period. Before that, Gabriel Vilardi and Kyle Connor had scored to put Winnipeg ahead 2-1 after Josh Johnston opened the scoring in the second period.
Dallas outshot Winnipeg 38-19 in regulation, but Jets goalie Connor Skinner made 35 saves. The Stars did not convert that shooting advantage into a lead until Hintz's power-play goal.
Defenseman Miro Heiskanen played 29 minutes and 20 seconds, the most of any Dallas skater. Thomas Harley logged 28 minutes and 27 seconds. The long shifts came because Esa Lindell was scratched from the lineup. Lian Bichsel played the next most ice time at 17 minutes and 47 seconds.
Heiskanen finished the game with five shots on goal, one blocked shot, and the overtime assist. Harley had no goals or assists. Neither defenseman scored, but their defensive work allowed Dallas to control the flow of the game until the final minute.
