The City of Rochelle has set a deadline of Dec. 14 for the final approval of the 2027 municipal budget. Mayor John Bearrows stated that city staff and the City Council are currently collaborating on the development of this spending plan. The process involves reviewing community needs and priorities for the coming year. Bearrows thanked staff and council members for their time and effort in this work.
The city’s fiscal timeline has been active throughout the fall. On Oct. 17, the Community Action Network held a Food Truck Event just south of the Flagg Township Museum. Bearrows noted a strong turnout for the gathering, which allowed residents to support local charitable efforts. Residents can still sign up for the CAN shopping spree, an experience Bearrows described as heartwarming for himself and his wife.
Infrastructure maintenance also took place in October. Steam Plant Road was closed at the railroad tracks to complete necessary repairs to the crossing. Bearrows thanked residents for their patience during the closure, noting that maintaining roads and infrastructure is essential for safe movement through the city.
The annual leaf vacuum program started on Oct. 19 and will run through November. Residents are asked to place leaves and grass clippings in the parkway instead of the street gutter. Bearrows explained that debris in gutters creates slippery conditions for cyclists and motorcyclists. It can also block storm sewer inlets, leading to drainage issues during heavy rain.
A reminder was issued for the next electronics recycling day, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 7. The event will run from 8 a.m. to noon at the street department located at 251 E. First Ave. This service is available exclusively to Rochelle residents. A list of accepted items is available on the city’s website or Facebook page.
Halloween activities included the Safe House Trick-or-Treat, the DRA Trick-or-Treat, and the traditional Oct. 31 event. Bearrows thanked volunteers, businesses, and residents for helping ensure a safe celebration for families. The city also encourages residents to enjoy the decorated hay bales displayed throughout the community during the fall season.
Holiday preparations are already underway for the winter months. The “Light Up Lincoln” event is set for Friday, Dec. 4. The evening will feature a holiday parade, the lighting of the Christmas tree at City Hall, and the presentation of the Rochelle Gratitude Award. Downtown merchants will offer special items, and Santa will be available for photos at City Hall.
On Sunday, Dec. 6, Flight Deck will host its “Deck the Hall” event. The gathering will include various vendors and a visit from Santa. Santa will be present between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., with no charge for photographs.
