Thomas Cahill, an 87-year-old resident of Bowling Green, Kentucky, was taken into custody on Monday, November 2, for his role in a fatal vehicle collision that occurred at the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Broadway. The incident took place on Saturday, August 1, when Cahill was operating a white 2013 Ford Fusion. He struck four pedestrians who were crossing the street with the walk signal. The Metro Nashville Police Department has formally charged Cahill with one count of failure to yield resulting in death and three counts of failure to yield resulting in serious injury.
The crash resulted in the death of Timothy Wedlock, 58, of Australia. Three other individuals sustained serious injuries and were hospitalized. Matthew Gregg, 44, of Jacksonville, Florida, Dianne Cooper, 58, of Parsons, Tennessee, and Kathleen Broderick, 21, of Knoxville, were all struck by the sedan. Cahill was treated at Vanderbilt University Medical Center for minor injuries sustained in the impact.
According to the police department, Cahill was driving with his wife and a caretaker when he accelerated into the intersection while facing a red light. The sedan plowed into the group of pedestrians as they crossed Lower Broadway. Detectives initially investigated whether a medical emergency had caused the driver to lose control or make the decision to accelerate. However, Cahill was eventually booked into the Davidson County Detention Center on Monday morning.
The driver contends that he has no memory of the incident, according to statements provided by the Metro Nashville Police Department. The charges reflect the severity of the injuries sustained by the four victims. The case marks the conclusion of the initial custody phase for the driver involved in the August collision.
