Juan C. Cruz Aceves, a 32-year-old former resident of Kenosha, Wisconsin, received a guilty verdict on Oct. 23 while missing from the Kane County courtroom. The defendant was convicted of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, a Class X felony, and possession of a controlled substance, a Class 1 felony. He had previously waived his right to a jury trial, opting instead for a three-day bench trial where his attorney represented him in his absence.

The legal process began months earlier when an Illinois State Police trooper pulled Cruz Aceves over for speeding on Interstate 90 westbound near Huntley. During the traffic stop, the officer determined that Cruz Aceves did not possess a valid driver’s license or valid insurance coverage for the vehicle. As a result, officials towed his car, initiating the chain of events that led to the drug discovery.

During a standard inventory search of the towed vehicle, officers located a backpack containing approximately 2.4 kilograms of cocaine. The release notes that the drug was packaged in two brick-style bundles wrapped in black tape and plastic. Authorities estimated the street value of the seizure at roughly $200,000. This discovery formed the central evidence in the case brought against Cruz Aceves.

Following the guilty verdict, Judge D.J. Tegeler revoked Cruz Aceves’ bail and issued a warrant for his arrest. The judge cited the defendant’s failure to appear in court as the primary reason for the revocation. Cruz Aceves is now scheduled to appear before the court on Dec. 18. If he does not show up for that hearing, authorities indicated he could be sentenced in absentia, potentially facing a prison term of 15 to 60 years.

Assistant State’s Attorney Hillary Sadler spoke to the outcome of the case, praising the coordinated effort among law enforcement agencies. She thanked the Illinois State Police for their role in targeting drug transporters and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office and Aurora Police Department for their assistance in bringing the case to trial. Sadler also acknowledged her trial partner, Jake Matekaitis, for conducting the proceedings. She noted that while the defendant chose to absent himself from the trial, he would not evade the consequences of his actions.
