Fifteen-year-old Javits Frimpong died in a hospital on Thursday after being shot in the stomach while walking to school in the Bronx. The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. near Crotona Park. Frimpong managed to run approximately one block before collapsing. Police confirmed he later died at a hospital.
Three teenage boys are currently the subjects of an active police search. Investigators described the suspects as wearing black sweatsuits and blue surgical masks. Surveillance video captured one individual fleeing the scene in a black hoodie, black sweatpants, and a mask. No arrests have been made, and authorities have not publicly identified the suspects.
Thomas Frimpong, the victim’s father, believes the shooting may have been triggered by bullying at his son’s school. He stated that the school principal contacted him three days before the incident. The principal informed him that two students had been bullying Javits. Both students were suspended for one week.
School officials also told Thomas that Javits was not responsible for a recent confrontation. They explained that his son was defending himself. Thomas quoted the principal’s words directly. “The principal told me Javits is innocent. Javits is innocent. He was defending himself,” Thomas said.
Javits moved from Ghana to New York about a year ago to live with his father. His mother remains in Ghana. Thomas said the move was intended to give his son a chance to build a better future. He described Javits as a quiet teenager who often stayed home and kept to himself.
Thomas remembered his son as a bright student with potential. “My son was precious, very clever,” he said. The final conversation between father and son took place on Thursday morning before they parted. Thomas told Javits to make sure he arrived at school on time. He did not expect those to be their last words together.
Thousands of people gathered for vigils to honor the teenager following the killing. The community is mourning the loss of a young life cut short. The investigation into the shooting remains open as police continue to search for the three suspects.
Thomas is searching for answers regarding the circumstances that led to the shooting. The family is dealing with the tragedy from different countries. Javits’ death has left his father and community demanding justice.
Police have not released additional details about the suspects’ identities. They continue to review surveillance footage from the area near Crotona Park. The three boys fled the scene immediately after the shooting. No one has been charged in connection with the death.
