iPhone Duo Sidebar Consumes Quarter of Cover Screen
A fixed right-side dock reduces the usable area of the 5.4-inch outer display, a design choice that contrasts with the flexible layout of the Galaxy Z Fold 8.

Apple’s new foldable smartphone dedicates a fixed vertical strip on the right side of its 5.4-inch cover display to a navigation sidebar. This design decision reduces the available screen real estate for primary content by approximately 15 percent. The hardware is currently in the hands of early adopters, and initial assessments suggest the software implementation limits the utility of the outer screen.
The Verge’s Allison Johnson identified this layout as a primary usability issue. She reported that the iPhone Duo feels more difficult to operate with one hand than its competitor, the Galaxy Z Fold 8. The physical dimensions of the Samsung device, which is taller and narrower, allow for easier navigation of its cover screen. For users who selected the Z Fold 8 specifically for its expansive outer display, the iPhone Duo’s interface presents a functional trade-off.
The sidebar on the iPhone Duo was intended to simplify navigation. However, because the dock occupies a permanent section on the right edge, it leaves a substantial portion of the display unused. A post on X visually compared the two devices, demonstrating the spatial difference between the Apple and Samsung interfaces. On the iPhone Duo, the fixed dock creates a dead zone that does not expand with the app content.
In contrast, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 offers more flexibility in how it utilizes the outer display. When set to use a navigation bar, the Z Fold 8 still allocates less space to system controls than the iPhone Duo. For users relying on gesture controls, the Samsung device wastes very little screen area. The Z Fold 8 allows main content to occupy the full width of the display, whereas the iPhone Duo restricts this space to force media to appear taller, mimicking the aspect ratio of a standard slab device.
Apple is attempting to solve the small display problem by constraining the canvas. By shrinking the available width, the system stretches content vertically. This approach differs from the method used by Samsung, which leaves the space open for main content. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 continues to serve as a successful example of how to manage a large outer screen without significant visual clutter.
The iPhone Duo is available for purchase now, though stock is limited. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 remains in active sales and continues to perform well in the market. Early user feedback indicates that the iPhone Duo’s software choices may impact its appeal to those who prioritize maximum screen utility on the cover display.
