Consumers who pre-ordered Apple’s new folding smartphone are facing longer wait times, with some delivery estimates extending into late January. This shift in availability occurred almost immediately after pre-orders opened on Friday, prompting Apple to adjust its manufacturing plans significantly to keep up with the volume of new customers.

The company stated that the delay was caused by what it termed "extraordinary" demand for the device. While this phrasing is frequently used for standard iPhone launches, supply chain reports now indicate that the delays were driven by genuine high demand rather than supply issues. To manage the rush and reduce the impact of scalpers, Apple limited purchases to a maximum of two units per customer during the initial ordering period.

In response to the sustained interest, Apple has increased its production targets for the iPhone Duo. According to a report from DigiTimes based on supply chain sources, the company has raised its shipment goal from 9.7 million units to 14 million units over the first 12 months. This represents an increase of more than 40 percent in manufacturing orders. The move suggests that Apple expects strong sales to continue well beyond the initial launch window.

Some early customers who initially received extended delivery dates have since been given earlier estimated shipping dates. This adjustment aligns with the reported ramp-up in production. The company is working to ensure that units reach consumers as quickly as possible while maintaining the quality control standards associated with its new hardware line.

Users of the new device are currently navigating a software ecosystem that is still adapting to the new form factor. Third-party apps have not yet been fully optimized for the folding screen, which has been a consistent point of feedback in early reviews based on a week of usage. However, Apple maintains that the situation is improving rapidly as developers update their applications to support the new interface.

Another notable aspect of the current model is the inclusion of Touch ID for security, a departure from the Face ID system used in previous iPhones. This design choice has been one of five key takeaways highlighted in early user assessments. Despite this, a report released today indicates that Apple is already testing prototypes for the iPhone Duo 2 that feature Face ID, suggesting a return to the facial recognition system in the next iteration of the product.

The combination of increased production targets and ongoing software updates positions Apple to handle the current surge in demand. The company’s proactive adjustment to manufacturing levels aims to stabilize delivery times for the remaining backlog of pre-orders while preparing for continued sales through the year.
