Hamburg prosecutors detained an 18-year-old male on Friday, charging him with the indirect murder of a 14-year-old girl from Indiana.
The arrest was executed on Thursday following a tip from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The suspect is linked to the Nefarious Maniac Kult, an online group that operates within a larger network known as COM. Prosecutors allege that between September and October, while the suspect was 17, he used the Discord platform to exert influence over the Indiana girl, whom they described as psychologically fragile.
According to the Hamburg public prosecutor's office, the suspect pressured the victim to cut herself and write the letters NMK on a wall using her own blood. He allegedly required video recordings of these acts. A few days after the self-harm incidents, the girl hanged herself in her bedroom. The suspect is further accused of requesting a video of her death, hoping to raise his standing within the group or gain entry to it.
FBI Indianapolis Special Agent in Charge Timothy J. O'Malley stated that his office worked with the Fort Wayne Police Department to provide German police with information that advanced the arrest. The Fort Wayne Homicide Unit identified the suspect as a contributor to the juvenile's death. O'Malley declared that anyone who targets or exploits a child should understand there is no safe haven from justice, adding that the FBI will work with global partners to hold suspects accountable regardless of where they live.
The case occurs during a period the FBI describes as a sharp rise in nihilistic violent extremism. FBI Director Kash Patel reported a 300 percent increase in such cases from September 2024 to September 2025. Many of these cases involve the group known as 764, which lacks a specific ideology but encourages self-harm and violence. Members of 764 also urge victims to produce videos documenting acts of self-harm or child sexual abuse material. The suspect remains in custody in Hamburg as the investigation continues.
