Jon Bonck is projected to win the open House race in Texas' 38th District. Preliminary results from Decision Desk HQ show the Republican candidate leading his Democratic opponent, Melissa McDonough. The victory will see Bonck replace outgoing Representative Wesley Hunt.

Hunt left the House earlier this year to pursue a seat in the United States Senate. His unsuccessful Senate bid left the southeastern Texas district open for a new representative. The district includes portions of the Houston suburbs and has seen shifting political dynamics in recent years.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Bonck had secured just more than 51 percent of the total vote. McDonough trailed with approximately 47 percent of the count. The narrow gap indicates a competitive contest between the two major party contenders in this suburban area.

Bonck is a mortgage banker and small business owner in the real estate sector. He campaigned on a conservative platform focused on several key policy areas. His proposals included strengthening border security, protecting Second Amendment rights, and reducing federal spending on foreign wars.

The candidate also pledged support for the legislative agenda of President Donald Trump. He positioned himself as a loyal ally within the party during the general election period. Bonck focused his messaging on economic stability and national security to appeal to the district's base of supporters.

Bonck's path to the general election was solidified in May. He won the Republican primary by a wide margin, signaling early momentum for his fall campaign. That strong showing helped establish his visibility among Republican voters in the district.

President Trump played a visible role in backing Bonck's candidacy. Ahead of the Republican primary, Trump issued a post on Truth Social granting Bonck his Complete and Total Endorsement. In the message, Trump praised the candidate as a successful business executive who understood America First Policies.

The endorsement detailed specific expectations for Bonck in Congress. Trump wrote that Bonck would fight to keep the border secure, stop migrant crime, and strengthen the military and veterans. The post also mentioned safeguarding elections and protecting the Second Amendment.

The transition of power in this district will proceed as Bonck prepares to take office. He will assume the responsibilities of the new member of Congress, replacing Wesley Hunt who has represented the district since 2023. The final certification of results will confirm the official winner.

With the election results in hand, attention turns to the composition of the new House of Representatives. Bonck's addition to the Republican caucus will impact committee assignments and legislative priorities for the upcoming session. The win adds another data point to the political narrative in Texas.
