Midland, Texas, jury verdicts often carry weight in capital cases, but this one resulted in the maximum penalty for a first-time offender. A local woman received a life sentence without the possibility of parole on Friday for the killing of her infant daughter.
The jury found 24-year-old Sarah Michelle Gilley-Wroe guilty of one count of capital murder of a child under 10. The verdict follows a trial centered on the death of a five-week-old girl at Midland Memorial Hospital on May 11, 2022. Medical records listed severe head trauma as the cause of death.
Investigators presented physical evidence indicating the infant suffered two fractures in the back of the skull. Authorities stated these injuries matched the profile of blunt force trauma. Experts calculated the force required to create such damage equaled the impact of a fall from a two-story building.
Detectives reviewed Gilley-Wroe's digital activity and found Google searches that supported the prosecution's timeline. While in custody, she made statements to a cellmate that investigators deemed incriminating. She claimed she threw the baby against the wall and struck the child repeatedly until the crying stopped.
Gilley-Wroe was the only adult alone with the infant during the window when the crime likely occurred. She argued that other family members or a pet could have caused the injuries. Those theories included the baby's father, her aunt, and a family dog. The jury rejected those alternatives and returned a guilty verdict.
The sentencing concluded the legal proceedings in Midland County. Gilley-Wroe will serve the remainder of her life in a state prison facility.
