Ohio’s early voting period concluded Sunday with a total of 399,918 ballots cast, a figure that has already surpassed the early vote total from the 2022 midterm election. With the state’s 8,956,209 registered voters now focused on Election Day, county boards of elections prepared for a final push of in-person turnout.
Lines stretched far beyond the entrances of voting centers in several counties on Sunday, the last day of the early window. In Franklin County, Columbus resident Demetria Peacher arrived at the polls around 10 a.m. after attending church. She reported waiting approximately three hours to cast her ballot, a duration she attributed to the high stakes of the 2026 election.
Voters cited specific economic and healthcare concerns as primary drivers for their early participation. Peacher, who works in the non-profit sector, stated that current funding levels prevent her organization from meeting basic needs for those it serves. She said, "We don’t have the funding to do things we’d love to do to help people in just meeting basic needs."
Healthcare accessibility also motivated early voting. Brad, a cancer patient who declined to share his last name, described the current administration’s handling of coverage as intermittent. He noted that coverage can be cut during active treatment, a factor he found critical. "Health care is hard to come by, and the current administration makes it so intermittent," Brad said. Other voters indicated they were selecting candidates with platforms focused on lowering out-of-control cost of living expenses.
Some voters expressed fatigue with the current political climate. Okema Graham said she was tired of the negative rhetoric and publicity surrounding the race. "We just want to support a positive political environment," Graham said. Despite the early close of business, lines remained visible at some locations past 6 p.m., more than an hour after the official closing time.
County officials reported heavy turnout across the state over the weekend. The 399,918 early ballots represent a substantial portion of the total registered electorate. With early voting now complete, the focus shifts to the final day of casting votes.
Polls will open at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow. Voters with absentee ballots that have not yet been mailed back must deliver them to county boards of elections before the 7:30 p.m. deadline.
