Greg Witt, a 35-year-old firefighter and United States Marine Corps sergeant, will be laid to rest in West Dundee on Friday after dying on Oct. 25 following a medical emergency during a training drill.
The village has scheduled temporary road closures in the Old Town neighborhood to accommodate the procession. These restrictions will begin at approximately 7 a.m. and continue through the morning, affecting areas near Grafelman Park, Washington Street, and Miller Funeral Home. Authorities also plan to close the intersection of Routes 31 and 72 for about 30 minutes starting at 8 a.m. to allow the cortege to pass. Motorists are advised to expect delays and follow the directions of public safety personnel.
Witt served as a firefighter for the Gilberts-based Rutland-Dundee Fire Protection District, a role he assumed in 2019. Prior to that, he served in the Marine Corps from 2013 to 2018, reaching the rank of sergeant. A 2009 graduate of Jacobs High School in Algonquin, he also earned an associate degree in Fire Science and Safety from Elgin Community College in 2020.
The family has arranged a visitation for Friday morning at The Venue at Goebbert’s Farm in Pingree Grove. This will be followed by a service at a Dundee Township church and a private burial. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Rutland-Dundee FPD Memorial Fund. These contributions are intended to establish a scholarship in Witt’s honor to recognize his dedication to the community.
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker ordered flags lowered from sunrise Thursday to sundown Friday to honor Witt. The governor’s resolution noted that Witt died in the line of duty. The Village of West Dundee extended its condolences to the family and colleagues, citing Witt’s dedicated service to the community. He is survived by his mother, Mary Witt, and two brothers. His father, Scott Witt, passed away previously.
The obituary described Witt’s life as centered on service to others. It noted that his fellow firefighters became an extended family united by their commitment to helping others. The scholarship fund aims to ensure his legacy of service and compassion continues to impact future generations.
