A boxing event in Loganholme, south of Brisbane, was disrupted by a drive-by shooting that left four people with injuries.
Queensland police received reports of gunfire from a vehicle at 8:15 p.m. on Saturday. Officers arrived at Fitzys Loganholme on Bryants Road, a licensed premises hosting the Logan City Titles Fight Night. The vehicle involved was observed leaving the scene, and the four injured individuals were transported to hospital for condition assessment.
Deputy Commander Chris Stream described the scene as confronting to the Today show. He confirmed that multiple people sustained gunshot wounds during the incident. The venue had been prepared for the fight night, an event intended to showcase local talent and community involvement.
Logan Mayor Jon Raven stated that residents in the area were frightened by the event. Raven told the program that the incident had sent a shockwave through the city, noting that it was an unfamiliar occurrence for Logan. He expressed sympathy for the victims, staff, and attendees, adding that he had previously attended similar events and viewed them as family-friendly gatherings with many children present.
Raven explained that the night was organized to help steer children away from violence. He stated that the organizer, who uses boxing to empower young people, would be devastated by the shooting. Raven noted that the incident was the opposite of the environment the organizer sought to create for youth reconnecting with their community.
On Sunday morning, Logan City Titles issued a statement on social media expressing heartbreak over the incident. The organizers described the event as a community showcase for hard work and skill inside the ring. They stated that such incidents have no place in the boxing community or the wider public.
The offenders remain at large. Police indicated they did not believe there was an ongoing threat to the public and urged anyone with information to come forward and contact them.
Police are currently assessing the conditions of the four individuals in hospital while continuing their search for the vehicle and its occupants.
